Breadsticks, known in Italy as grissini, are more than just a side dish—they are a versatile culinary accessory that enhances any meal. They come in many forms, each satisfying a different craving: they can be light and crunchy (like those pencil-thin bakery grissini), or soft and tender (like thick, garlicky restaurant versions). Flavored with garlic, onion, salt or cheese. They can also be sweetened with cinnamon and sugar, too! They often accompany Italian meals and are paired with pasta made with alfredo and marinara sauces.

The breadstick isn't just a modern invention for dipping. It has an elegant and historical origin that brings flavorful meaning to how it has lasted the test of time. The first grissini, or breadstick, are traditionally believed to have been invented in the Piedmont region of Italy, near Turin, in 1679. Supposedly created by a baker named Antonio Brunero for the sickly Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy, the crunchy sticks were easy to digest, portable, and resistant to staleness.

Legend says the King liked them so much that the grissini quickly became popular among the nobility and gentry, evolving from a simple health food to a stylish, iconic treat of Italian aristocracy.

When it comes to dipping sauces, breadsticks satisfy just about everyone at the table. They are universally complementary, making them the most cooperative dish on the menu. Because they traditionally accompany Italian meals, they are perfectly positioned to be dragged through rich sauces like marinara, hearty Bolognese, or creamy Alfredo. You can also add them to a delicious soup . If you prefer, enjoy them with your salad, using the crusty stick to scrape up the last bit of dressing or vinaigrette.

The aroma of fresh-baked breadsticks instantly warms a home and genuinely improves every meal, turning an ordinary dinner into a moment of collective enjoyment. If you can't decide, order extra and try them all!
