NATIONAL DARTS DAY

NATIONAL DARTS DAY

Sharpen your throwing arm, take aim, and mark your calendars for June 29 - it's National Darts Day! Today we invite enthusiasts and newcomers alike to celebrate the game of darts and discover why it's enjoyed by millions worldwide, from casual pub players to serious competitors.

#NationalDartsDay

Darts is more than just a game. It's a sport that combines precision, strategy, and camaraderie. With over 16 million Americans playing darts, celebrating National Darts Day on June 29, the 180th day of the year, also symbolically honors the highest possible score a player can achieve in a single round.

The number "180" holds iconic status in the world of darts and the holy grail that represents the skill and mastery of the player. A dart board consists of numbered segments of 1 through 20--the outer ring (double ring) and the inner ring (the triple ring). The rings get smaller the closer you get to the bullseye. Hitting it the inner ring three times in a row demonstrates incredible accuracy, consistency, and a steady hand.

Innovative History of Darts

The roots of darts stretch back to medieval England, where soldiers honed their aim by throwing sharp objects at tree trunks. Over centuries, this practice evolved into a recreational activity, with wooden barrels serving as early dartboards. Modern darts were invented by Brian Gamlin in 1896, who established the numbered scoring system. By 1908, darts gained official recognition as a game of skill, solidifying its place as a popular pastime in British pubs.

In 1975, the invention of soft-tip darts was a pivotal moment in darts history. Invented by Rudy Allison, Founder of Arachnid, who discovered the enjoyment of steel-tip darts during his travels in Europe. He observed that manual scorekeeping on chalkboards frequently interrupted the game's flow. Allison envisioned an electronic dartboard that could tally the scores automatically. With the help of a few others, Allison took his vision and created the first electronic soft-tip dartboard, which is still being used today!

Darts have grown into a spirited competition that brings people together every day. In fact, tournaments, such as the BullShooter World Tournament of Champions, have brought darts players together for friendly competition. Started in 1986 by Arachnid, the BullShooter Tournament features 21 events and attracts 1,000 entrants across the country competing to win $150,000 in prize money. The events are so hugely popular, the BullShooter Invitational Shootout is televised on ESPN.
