As long as baking has been documented, cookie-like wafers have existed. Even though cookies have changed and evolved over the years with the modern standards of sweetness and variety, we still enjoy every single bite we take. The mild sweetness of pecan sandie cookies pair well with tea and coffee. The texture of these melt-in-your-mouth cookies will remind you of the shortbread cookies your grandma used to make. Pecan sandies are one such cookie. The reason they are called this may seem obvious – they have a sand like texture with chopped pecans inside them.
No matter what they are called, pecan sandies are super easy to make. In fact, some recipes for this kind of cookie only calls for four ingredients. These ingredients include cold salted butter, light brown sugar, all-purpose flour, and finely chopped roasted pecans. Some bakers like to dust their pecan sandies with powdered sugar, although this ingredient is totally optional!
5 Pecan Sandie Origins
France - According to some food historians, pecan sandies may have originated in medieval France in the region of Sablé-sur-Sarthe. In fact, the word sablé is the French word for sandy.
Saudi Arabia - Some historians say the pecan sandie was part of medieval Arab cuisine. The reason for this belief is that countries like Malaysia have an “Arab biscuit,” which is very similar to the pecan sandy.
Mexico - The pecan sandies is known as the Mexican wedding cookies to some. The story says European nuns or Spanish conquistadors brought the recipe with them to Mexico.
Russia - Pecan sandies are also called Russian tea cakes because Russians have their own version of the cookie.
United States - In 1955, Keebler registered Sandies as the brand name for their pecan sandies. Keebler definitely gets the credit for marketing the cookie first, especially in the U.S.
