NATIONAL UNITY DAY

NATIONAL UNITY DAY

Mark your calendars for the second Saturday in December because we are celebrating National Unity Day! We are asking everyone to come together, celebrate our shared humanity, and build bridges to create a more united society.

#NationalUnityDay

Unity is a sense of respect, togetherness and a shared purpose among a group of individuals. It’s the feeling of being part of something larger than yourself, where the well-being of a group with a variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences, come together for a common good. It's about finding strength in diversity, not erasing it. In a world that often emphasizes our differences, National Unity Day aims to remind us of the powerful bonds that connect us all.

"National Unity Day is an invitation to look beyond our personal, professional, and social media bubbles and connect with those from different backgrounds and experiences. It's a chance to recognize the everyday acts of kindness and bridge building that are already happening in our communities and to be inspired to do more."

~US United, Founder of National Unity Day

Simple, Everyday Acts of Unity

Unity is the foundation of a thriving community. It's a conscious choice and a continuous effort. Whether it's a community rolling up its sleeves to clean a local park, or a neighbor checking on an elderly neighbor, unity happens when we all build connections through acts of kindness, and with respect and consciousness.

Being a unifier starts with taking intentional steps, both big and small, to strengthen the connections between people. These actions can build a more connected neighborhood and community. A healthy community works like an ecosystem, where every part supports the others. Unity is the force that ensures when one part of the community is struggling, the rest rallies to provide the nourishment and support it needs to thrive.

Promoting unity begins with asking questions and truly listening to the answers. When you disagree, try to share a personal experience that offers a different perspective. It is very hard for anyone to tell you that your experience is wrong. By definition, it is your actual experience. Humans are storytellers so don’t be afraid to be one. That is how we find common ground. Unity grows with human connection and in service of others. Talk to people directly, authentically and without judgment. Respond in kind with your own stories and honest, sincere and thoughtful commentary.

Make the Call

We are asking all Americans to honor National Unity Day by taking the initiative to reach out and rebuild a relationship with a family member or friend that they've drifted from due to our divisive culture. Let National Unity Day be the reason to reconnect.

The first step is the hardest, and a simple message can be the key to rebuilding trust. A 2024 Harris poll found that close to 1 in 5 Americans have cut off a relative due to politics, and almost 40% avoid family or friends they disagree with at the holidays. Making the call for unity doesn't mean seeing eye-to-eye on every issue; it means choosing to see each other with respect and honoring the bonds we share.

CELEBRATING NATIONAL UNITY DAY

Celebrating National Unity Day is all about turning the idea of unity into action. Since the day falls on the second Saturday in December, you can create community togetherness by using the holiday spirit as a way to encourage unity in your community. Acts of kindness and support delivered by an entire community to those in need are the best example of unity one will see.

  1. Partner with US United: US United partners with local sheriff offices across the country during their Holiday Spectacular to assemble and deliver care packages to families in need. Monetary and in-kind service donations are collected to help families in need solve problems, such as helping with home repairs; purchasing new appliances; providing a mattress for a child; making a car payment so a job is not lost; and prescription payments to stay healthy.

  2. Create Kindness Kits: Assemble small care packages with items like socks, snacks, and toiletries and give them to someone in need.

  3. Organize a Neighborhood Food Drive: Set up collection bins or locations and ask your neighbors to donate non-perishable food items. Then, as a group, deliver the donations to a local food pantry.

  4. Use the 5 Mile Rule: Keep it simple and focus on building unity within 5 miles of home. Get to know your neighbors and check in on how they are doing, help a person in need, volunteer locally, attend community/town meetings, or support a local business. Everyone’s 5 miles overlap so if we all do this, we cover the entire country and culture will change.

  5. Take the Unity Pledge: Pledge to be a Unifier by seeking common ground and embracing UNITY over division.

  6. Wear Purple - The color of Unity: Show your support by wearing purple, the color of Unity, and share your photos and experiences on social media using the hashtag #nationalunityday and tag @us_united_org.
