Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819 and became Queen of the United Kingdom in 1837 at the age of 18. She reigned for over 63 years, until her death in 1901. During her reign, Canada evolved from a colony into a self-governing nation within the British Empire.
First declared in 1845, Victoria Day was celebrated on May 24 as an official Canadian holiday to honor Queen Victoria's legacy and the importance of tradition and patriotism in Canada’s constitutional monarchy. In 1952, the holiday shifted to the Monday before May 25, providing Canadians a long weekend.
Victoria Day marks more than just Queen Victoria’s birthday. Officially, it serves as a celebration of Canada’s historical ties to the British monarchy and the development of Canadian identity. However, it also represents the unofficial kickoff to summer.
DID YOU KNOW? Victoria Day is sometimes informally referred to as the "May Two-Four" weekend? It's true! The weekend is a nod both to the May 24th date and the 24-packs of beer often enjoyed during the celebrations!
