<p>The first compulsory education law in America is passed in Massachusetts, requiring parents and masters to ensure their children could read and understand the principles of religion and the capital laws of the country. The Law of 1642 was the foundation of public education in the U.S. </p>
<p>The Continental Army is established by the Continental Congress, marking the birth of the U.S. Armed Forces.</p>
<p>The Second Continental Congress passes the Flag Act of 1777 and adopts the "Stars and Stripes" as the Flag of the U.S.</p>
<p>Isaac Fischer patents sandpaper. His invention used a cloth backing, making the product more durable and easier to use, improving the process in woodworking and metalworking industries.</p>
<p>Anglo rebels in Sonoma, California, start a rebellion against Mexico and proclaim the California Republic. The U.S. Army provided support with the goal of California becoming a part of the U.S. </p>
<p>Hawaii becomes a U.S. territory through the Hawaiian Organic Act. The Act granted U.S. citizenship to residents of the former Hawaiian Republic and established a framework for territorial governance. Hawaii wouldn't become a state until 1959.</p>

<p>Pennsylvania becomes the first (and only) state in the U.S. to celebrate Flag Day officially as a state holiday. While celebrated through the country, Pennsylvania is the only state that gives employees a day off. </p>
<p>The first commercially produced electronic digital computer, UNIVAC I, is dedicated by the U.S. Census Bureau. The dedication marked the dawn of the commercial computing if digital information era. </p>
<p>President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a bill into law that places the words "under God" into the Pledge of Allegiance. The inclusion of the language was intended to remind citizens of religious heritage in the U.S. as a defense mechanism against communism. </p>

Former slave who escaped from Port Tobacco, Maryland, to Upper Canada. He founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, Ontario. During his life, he saved 118 enslaved people, including his own brother.
Considered one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, Summit coached 1,098 career wins during her coaching career. At of her retirement, no other coach in the history of college basketball coach had reached that amount of career wins. She was head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team from 1974 to 2012.
