Nathan Hale volunteers to spy for the Continental Army.

Nathan Hale volunteers to spy for the Continental Army. Hale gathered intelligence for several weeks, but was eventually captured by the British. Hale was hanged September 22, 1776.

The patent is granted for the sewing machine.

Elias Howe is granted a patent for the sewing machine. Howe's design used two threads, combining a needle with an eye at the point and a shuttle underneath. The machine could complete 250 stitches per minute.

Catholic Priest and astronomer George Searle discovers the asteroid 55 Pandora. He named the asteroid after Pandora, the first woman in Greek Mythology.
