NATIONAL CAT DAY

National Cat Day on October 29th is the purrfect day to give extra attention, treats, and appreciation to the independent, often hilarious, felines who grace our lives.

#NationalCatDay

Cats make excellent, if opinionated, companions. They rarely miss you, but when they do, you certainly know it—usually in the form of a synchronized head-butt, a sudden case of zoomies at 3:00 AM, or a perfect loaf positioned exactly where you need to sit. National Cat Day is a celebration of all these unique cat quirks and the joy they bring.

National Cat Day also serves as an awareness day with a serious purpose to urges pet lovers to adopt from local shelters and reminds us that neutering and spaying our furry companions helps reduce the abandoned population.

Shelters are full of cats and kittens in need of forever homes. These feline fur babies come with as many personalities as they do colors and coats. They curl into our hearts and will just as quickly remind us they decide who they love. Whether they were born in the shelter, surrendered or abandoned, 3.4 million find their way to a shelter.

5 Tips for Pet Adoption

When considering the adoption of a furbaby, take your time. Each shelter animal will touch your heart, so be sure to find a life-long love.

  1. Consider your lifestyle. Will you have time for an active kitten or will an adult cat be more to your pace?

  2. Make multiple visits before making a choice. Sometimes, the purrfect cat will choose you.

  3. Spend one-on-one time with the cat so you have some bonding meowments and her true personality comes through.

  4. Do other members of your fur family need to be considered? If so, be sure to introduce them to be sure their personalities mesh.

  5. When you bring your new family member home, have a space ready for him to decompress and adjust to his new abode. Don’t be surprised if he hides at first. This is normal cat behavior.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL CAT DAY

This is a day for appreciation, activism, and a little lighthearted internet fun!

  1. Pay extra attention to your cat today! Buy a new toy, upgrade their favorite salmon snack, or spend extra time engaging in active play.

  2. If you are ready, adopt a new cat! If you can't, donate old blankets, food, or funds to your local animal shelter to support their critical mission.

  3. Contact a local rescue organization and offer to foster a cat or kitten. This temporary act saves two lives--the cat you foster and the one that takes its place in the shelter.

  4. Be virtually impactful! Volunteer by helping a shelter manage its social media, write adoption descriptions, or share photos of adoptable cats online.

  5. Watch a cat documentary, stream a live kitten cam, or simply spend an hour scrolling through the best feline content the internet has to offer.

  6. Post photos of your own pets or share shelter resources on social media using the hashtag #NationalCatDay.
