A curious event is any occurrence that baffles and intrigues us. It’s a historical moment, a scientific anomaly, or a personal experience that leaves us scratching our heads and asking, "What just happened?" These events challenge our understanding of the world and remind us that there is still so much we don't know. From ghost ships found adrift at sea to strange signals from the depths of space, curious events are the universe's greatest puzzles.
The United States has a rich history of strange and unexplained events that continue to capture the public imagination. We've gathered a two weird things events that have happened in our country.
The Lost Colony
Long before droves of immigrants started coming North America, about 115 English people established a permanent settlement in July of 1587 on Roanoke Island (now known as North Carolina). According to records, about a month after arrival, colonists persuaded their Governor, John White, to return to England for supplies and reinforcements. He reluctantly agreed, leaving his wife, daughter, and newborn granddaughter Virginia Dare (the first English child born in the Americas) behind. He expected to return within a few months. Unfortunately, due to a major naval war between England and Spain, White was unable to secure a ship and return to the island for three years.
White finally landed back on Roanoke Island in 1590, only to find entire colony disappeared. Everyone was gone with no trace of them. In fact, he couldn't even find human remains. The only evidence he found of the colony was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a fence post and "CRO" carved into a tree. The fate of the 115 colonists remains one of America's oldest and most profound mysteries. Theories range from assimilation into local Native American tribes to starvation or disease.
The Disappearance of D.B. Cooper
On the eve of Thanksgiving in 1971, a man identified as Dan "D.B." Cooper hijacked a Boeing 727 flying from Portland to Seattle. After receiving a $200,000 ransom and four parachutes, he ordered the plane to fly towards Mexico City. Somewhere over the rugged terrain of southwestern Washington, Cooper parachuted from the rear of the plane with the ransom money and was never seen or heard from again. Despite an extensive manhunt and decades of FBI investigation, no conclusive evidence of his fate or identity has ever been found, making it the only unsolved case of air piracy in commercial aviation history.
