NATIONAL ESCAPE DAY

NATIONAL ESCAPE DAY

Each year on January 30th, we take a much needed break to celebrate National Escape Day. This day isn't about running away from our responsibilities, it's a day about making time to reset ourselves after the winter holidays and cold stretch of January.

#NationalEscapeDay

By late January, the magic of Christmas and Hanukah have faded an d our New Year celebrations are packed away until next year. The weather is dreary with cold winds and minimal sunshine. February is fast approaching and we suddenly feel like we are in a slump. Let's face it. We are burnt out! Luckily, National Escape Day has arrived at the perfect time to push us to refocus, reset, and rejuvenate our mind and body for the last stretch before spring.

Think of this day as your personal guilt-free pass from the monotony of the daily grind. This is the perfect day to prioritizes personal wellness. We're not asking you to abandon your life on National Escape Day, we recommending you choose to step away for a little self-care.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”
~Anne Lamott

Escaping today can involve several different things. It could mean buying a plane ticket for a weekend get-away, putting a "Do Not Disturb" sign on your bedroom door, or getting lost in the steam of a hot cup of tea and a book you've been wanting to read. The point is, use National Escape Day to detach from the "should-dos" and reconnect with the "want-tos."

EMBRACE NATIONAL ESCAPE DAY

You don't need a massive budget or a week of PTO to participate. All you need is the willingness to disappear for a moment. From digital detoxes to local adventures, it’s time to stop dreaming about a break and actually take one. Ready to plot your getaway? Here is how to master the art of the mini-escape this week.

  1. Take a Digital Detox. Turn off all your notifications and escape for 24-hours from news cycle and social media.

  2. Have a Movie Marathon. Diving into a cinematic universe is a great way to leave reality behind for a few hours. Don't forget to grab some extra snacks and drinks on your way home so you can avoid having to disrupt your viewing time.

  3. Explore Culinary Delights. Find a bakery or restaurant that serves cuisine from a country you’ve always wanted to visit. Use your visit to try authentic foods and savor the flavor as though you are visiting the country of origin.

  4. Escape Room. Book a session at a local escape room with friends. This is a great way to celebrate National Escape Day...literally. Solving puzzles to "escape" a locked room is a great metaphor for breaking out of your daily routine.

  5. Small Road Trip. Pack a small bag and drive in one direction for two hours. Stay at a cozy B&B, explore your the town you stopped in, and enjoy a meal at the local cafe or restaurant before heading back home.

HISTORY BEHIND NATIONAL ESCAPE DAY

We were unable to find the founder of National Escape Day. However, we did find the day made its first appearance around 2016. Until we find who created this day, we will take it as an anonymous gift from someone who simply realized we all needed a break!
