An ice cream soda is one of the simplest treats to enjoy on any warm summer day. The simple ingredients of ice cream and soda make it one of the easiest things to make and enjoy.

There are many claims to the invention of the ice cream soda. One such claim was made by a Mr. Robert McCay Green. According to Green, he created the beverage in 1874 in Philadelphia when he ran out of ice for his shaved ice treats. Once he began substituting ice cream, he had a hit on his hands. Green even included in his will that his gravestone read, "Here lies the originator of the ice cream soda."

Philip Mohr of Elizabeth, New Jersey, also lays claim to creating the ice cream soda. In 1862, Mohr began mixing soda water with ice cream to make the drink colder. He even went as far as advertising the Newport Daily News (1862) for Sheld's Celebrating Ice Cream Sodak, encouraging his to "Try It, Try It, Try It, It." By the looks of it, it was something new at the time.

Whoever invented the ice cream soda, it was certainly a winning combination. For generations, we have been enjoying these creamy carbonated desserts at pharmacies and soda fountains across the country.
